Governance

AUUC is governed by three entities: the Board of Directors, the Program Council, and the Executive Committee.

The Board of Directors is responsible for setting church policy, providing supervision for staff and directing the affairs of the congregation.  The Board determines and presents an annual budget to the congregation; approves staff contracts and employment agreements; and reviews and approves any long-term rental agreements.

The Board of Directors meets the first Wednesday of each month from 7 to 9 pm.  All meetings are open to the Congregation and members are encouraged and welcome to attend.  Members of the Board are elected by the Congregation at the Annual Meeting (generally in the spring).

The Program Council determines and delivers church programs. It provides communication and coordination support to AUUC committees in executing the mission of the Congregation. The Program Council consists of the elected Program Council Chair and committee representatives.

The Executive Committee consists of the minister, the Board president, the Program Council Chair, and the Financial Advisor. It works with day-to-day business decisions.

Stewardship and Financial Management

AUUC is an independent Church and a member of the Unitarian Universalist Association.  As an independent Church, AUUC must generate all of its income, manage its finances, and pay all of its expenses. Sources of AUUC revenue include

  • Annual member contributions (pledges)
  • Rental income (from rental of the church facility)
  • Annual Services Auction
  • Other fundraising activities

As an independent religious institution, Accotink depends on the generosity of its members and friends to sustain quality programs and facilities.

Stewardship activities, including contributions of time, talent, and treasure, are integral to the life of Accotink Unitarian Universalist Church.

The Board of Directors maintains a written financial management system under the auspices of the Financial Advisor. Budget estimates developed in accordance with the financial management system are presented to the Congregation prior to Board approval. The operating budget is approved by the Board of Directors.

An Endowment Fund has been established and is overseen by the Endowment and Bequests Committee.
