Connect and Volunteer

Opportunities to Share Your Time and Talent

Image result for volunteerAUUC is a small but very active congregation. Our programs and worship service depend on a steady stream of volunteers. Roles within the church can provide an outlet for your talents and interests, develop new skills and insights, as well as help our church grow. Some require a regular assignment; many others can be done when you have time.

See if you can find the space in your heart and time in your schedule to help with any of the following needs. If you have an interest or would like more information, please contact [email protected] or [email protected]

Event Planner

Can you pull off a fun event? We are looking for someone to organize one or a series of concerts or other events at the church for 1) a fun social time; 2) to increase the church’s visibility throughout the Burke area; and 3) to raise money for the church’s upcoming improvements. Help and guidance from the BOD is available, and you’re practically guaranteed an outpouring of volunteer help from Accotinkers for the day of the event. We need someone to be the main point of contact and coordinator.

FUNdraising Coordinator(s)

Help organize, plan, and implement additional FUN fundraising events/activities throughout the year as deemed necessary by the BOD. If you’re able to plan a fun event, this job is for you!

In our efforts to make AUUC a more open and welcoming community, we are expanding the number of greeters for worship each Sunday.  Greeters are the first welcome that members and visitors receive as they enter the church, setting the mood for the rest of the service.  Greeters help visitors feel at home and guide them through their first time at AUUC. The contact information greeters obtain allows us to add new visitors to the newsletter list and to follow up personally.

You can be part of this welcoming initiative.  New greeters will be paired with experienced greeters and only need to contribute about 20 minutes of their time before church services once or twice per quarter. Please contact [email protected] for more information.

Hospitality and Refreshment Committee

Help AUUC be welcoming, inclusive, and fun! Coordinate monthly brunches, weekly coffee hour foods, and other events where food is served. Help ensure that the refreshments offered and the way they are offered are culturally welcoming and nutritionally safe (e.g., ensure food ingredients are posted).

Roadside Signs Coordinator and Team

We’d like to place roadside signs along the busy roads near our church to advertise our presence. We need someone to coordinate weekly installation/pick-up.

Composting Volunteers

Inspired by our church-wide focus on environmental stewardship, we have begun a new composting project. We now have a bin in our kitchen marked for composting and a large enclosure near our shed where we’ve started dumping food and garden waste. We need a few volunteers who are willing to transport that bin from the kitchen to the compost pile on one Sunday each month.  It’s an easy and important job. Sign up for one or more weekly shifts here

Additionally, there are many ongoing ways you can help:

We ALWAYS need Sunday Service Volunteers: Help us with our Sunday Services. If you can Usher, Greet and/or make a mean cup of Joe, we NEED you! Contact [email protected], [email protected], or [email protected]

Enjoy working outdoors? Help maintain the church grounds by weed-wacking once a week in the areas that can’t be reached with the mower.  About an hour per week.  Please contact JoAnn Flanagan.

Ongoing Events & Groups

nUUners Discussion Group

The nUUners group are members and friends of AUUC who get together informally for conversation and enlightenment. There are no dues, no sign-ups and attendance is not recorded. We meet on the 2nd and 4th Mondays from 11:15 to 1:00 p.m. in the gallery of the church. Come for all or part of the time. No reservations are required.  Bring a bag lunch; dessert and drinks are provided.  We socialize over lunch, which includes the sharing of joys, concerns, and news. From noon until 1:00 p.m. we talk about a topic that has been selected by one of the members. The leader for the day presents 10-20 minutes of information on the topic and then guides the ensuing discussion. Everyone helps to set up, clean up, and we take turns in providing dessert.

Women’s Book Discussion Group

If you are a woman who likes to read a wide range of books, join this friendly group for some lively conversation and fellowship.  These afternoon meetings, generally the third Tuesday of the month (except in December) at 1 p.m., are in members’ homes or at local libraries.  Watch the newsletter, order of service announcements, or website for the complete reading list and location. Caring Carders of AUUC

The Caring Carders write cards to members and friends of our community in response to Joys and Concerns.

AUUC Choir

Join the AUUC Choir at weekly rehearsals most Thursdays at 7:30 p.m. at AUUC.  Singing at rehearsals, at Sunday Worship Services, and for special occasions is a unique way to contribute to our faith community. Come lend your voice and your spirit to create beauty and inspiration in our worship services. [email protected]

Gardening Group

Accotink’s garden serves as a transition from the mundane world into sacred space.  It’s an expression of the UU Seventh Principle: “Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part.” Our garden is a wildlife habitat, as certified by the National Wildlife Federation and we are always in need of help to maintain this beautiful space.

Poetry Club

Are you a poetry lover or are you interested in becoming a poetry lover?  AUUC has recently started a poetry club. Join us to read, enjoy, and learn what the poems are saying.  You might want to share your own poetry too. This group is open to anyone with an interest in reading and understanding poetry.  We meet once a month on the 2nd Wednesday in the evenings.
