Feb. 16–23 – Hypothermia Shelter

For the 14th year, AUUC will be hosting a hypothermia shelter and everyone is invited to participate.  We provide a warm place to sleep and dinner each night at ~6:30 for our 30+ guests.

To make all this happen, we need a set-up crew each evening to ensure the building is ready to receive our guests. Most importantly, we need people to prepare meal items to be at AUUC between 5:15 – 5:30PM each day and people to arrange/serve the food and clean the kitchen after the meal.  Shelley Brosnan and Chris Stunkard run our dinner operations.

This is a family friendly event and older children (~10) are welcome to participate in the shelter any night under parental supervision. In addition, the Children’s Spiritual Development Committee will host the first night (Sunday) and also provide ways for our younger children to be involved. True Accotink Colors (TAC) will host Friday’s shelter night.

Use this SIGNUP LINK to review and sign up for the various volunteer opportunities. If you need assistance volunteering or would like more information, please contact Ed K.

In addition to food and shelter, we will again collect donations of seasonally appropriate clothing and personal care items for our hypothermia shelter guests. To help with planning, we’ve created this sign-up for some of the most popular items. All quantities are minimum goals; feel free to bring more than requested even if the list says “All Slots Filled.” Any items not taken by our guests will be sent back to the main shelter or shared with other AUUC partners in our local community.

In addition to items on the sign-up, we welcome sample-sized toiletries (such as those from hotel stays), new underwear, new or gently used winter coats and adult-sized clothing items, and winter accessories like hats, scarves, and gloves. We also like to provide a selection of new or gently used books and recent magazines.  Please limit your clothing donations to winter-appropriate items and ensure they are clean and ready to wear.

Donations should be placed in the labeled bin in the coat closet. Thank you for your support. Our guests always appreciate your generosity!

Our UU principles stress “the inherent worth and dignity of every person” and “the interdependent web of all existence”……together, we will help a lot of people again this year.
