April is Child Abuse Prevention Month

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, and AUUC has planted a pinwheel garden, joining  libraries, community centers, local businesses, schools, and other houses of worship throughout Fairfax County. Pinwheels symbolize a happy, healthy childhood and are the national symbol for child abuse prevention. Fast Facts from Fairfax County:

  • Nearly 260,000 children live in Fairfax County.
  • In FY 2024, more than 3,600 of those children were involved with Child Protective Services.
  • Child abuse and neglect cuts across all demographic areas and impacts our entire community.

What actions can we take?

  • Plant a pinwheel garden in your yard this month to create awareness.
  • Donate handmade items year-round to Fairfax Department of Family Services for them to distribute to children in need – items such as  cozy blankets, crocheted baby animals, knitted soft toys, hand-painted journals.
    • Donations can be dropped off or mailed to the Pennino Office Monday-Friday 8 a.m.-4 p.m., 12011 Government Center Parkway, Suite 600, Fairfax VA 22035.
